The Power of Reading

My toddler about loves every single book that Eric Carle draws. My son loves everything written by Dr. Seuss.

My daughter latest favorite is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See? by: Bill Martin Jr and Pictures by Eric Carle.

This book is just extremely fun to read with her and to teach her basic new words, as well as colors and sounds.

Brown Bear goes growl!

Red Bird goes chirp, chirp.

Yellow Duck goes quack, quack.

Blue Horse goes neigh, neigh.

Green Frog goes ribbit, ribbit.

Purple Cat goes meow, meow.

White dog goes bark, bark.

Black Sheep goes baah, baah.

Goldfish goes kisses, kisses.

Teacher goes: children children……

After we sing the book a couple of times we play match the colors, then match the sounds…. She absolutely loves and it helps her develop. My six year old also helps me with the sounds. He is learning how to read and I always ask for his help with the words. I spend this time teaching my kids the love of reading and working on basic language skills that will help them be successful.

You know what is the difference between a book in a rich child’s hand and a book in a poor child’s hand? NONE. The love of reading will actually close achievement gaps in children. So why do we see such a big disadvantage between children? Well, a book in a child’s hand is no different, however, to be effective it has to be read.

If we, parents, want to close the achievement gap in our children’s education, then, we parents, must take a stand and read to our kids.

It is not the teachers responsibility to read to our children. I know that being a busy/ working mom is rough, however, my children know how sacred reading time is to us as a family.

I want to see my children succeed and I bet you do too. Start small. You may not be the best reader, but with practice and dedication you will make a HUGE difference in your child’s life.

You have been empowered.
Be a blessing especially to your little ones….
